The Age of Darkness is where everything starts. The epic RPG series breaks the nine main games up into three different ages: The Age of Darkness, the Age of Enlightenment, and the Age of Armageddon. Now that we’ve spent a bit of time on the origins of this iconic game franchise, let’s dive into the games! The series is broken up into three different ages Speaking of astronauts, Richard also made his way to space in 2008, when he was flown to the International Space Station. It was picked up by California Pacific Computer Company. One game he was working on, called Akalabeth, ended up being a huge success. At the time, he was working at ComputerLand, and game creation was just a hobby. Back then, he was programming them on teletype terminals, where code was stored on literal paper tape spools. The games follow more traditional adventure tropes, with evil wizards, revenge, and classic good versus evil plot lines.Īs mentioned, the series was created by Richard Garriott, who got his start making video games in 1979. Set in a fantasy world, Ultima follows the adventures of the Avatar (that’s you!). The brainchild of Richard Garriott, the series spans the world of Britannia and takes players on what feels like an endless adventure. If you’ve played almost any modern RPG, you know the impact this has had on the genre as a whole.

This game introduced party gameplay where players controlled multiple characters. The third game in the series, Ultima III: Exodus, was another iconic entry. Later games also added features that you can still find in RPGs today. The original helped define the computer role-playing genre when it was released in 1989. Ultima is well-known in the gaming community, and for good reason. But, before we dive into that, we’re going to take a trip down memory lane to talk about the series as a whole and its creator, Richard Garriott. We’re going to give a brief overview of each game in the series and talk a bit about the spin-offs, as well. The series is broken up into three different ages.It probably will work on the Retron 77 with the latest community software update, but this is untested. It will not work with Javatari, or the Atari Flashback Portable. The attached ROM is 128K (DFSC format), and may be played via Stella, or on hardware via a Harmony Encore or an Unocart/PlusCart with the latest firmware for each. Hopefully this limited demo will give people a good idea as to the look and feel of gameplay, as well as allowing them to determine how well it works on their own consoles. On modern TVs, it can go either way as to which looks better. On CRT displays, I've found that the B&W display mode has much less visible flicker. This demo also has two display modes, selectable with the Color/B&W switch: Color includes an 'accent color' in certain parts of the game, and B&W does not, but shows a more 'solid' display.

The game saves when you save at your home in Arcadia, and automatically when the following game events occur: character creation, going up a level, dying (sorry), buying equipment other than food, and learning a new spell (if you figure out how!). This version includes the ability to save your game if you have an AtariVox or SaveKey attached to your second controller port (or that option enabled in Stella). You can go up in level to level 6, and earn gold to upgrade equipment. This demo contains a reduced world map with just the starting city of Arcadia, Queen Avaline's castle, and surrounding lands, as well as one dungeon. I've been reluctant to release a public demo of the game with my custom maps, as I did not want too much of the game spoiled prior to release. I uploaded a new public demo of the game. If you wish to save your game progress, then you will need an AtariVox or SaveKey for the second joystick port. The premise and gameplay are explained in the attached manuals.
